I. How Dogs Think
Like the wolves they are descended from, dogs are pack animals. Thousands of years of evolution have instilled in them their own unique way of dealing with the world. Read this informative and interesting section to understand your dog’s perspective on things before you begin your training.
II. Congratulations On Your Adoption! Now What???
Thanks for adopting a dog from United Animal Friends! This section is just packed full of useful information to guide you from start to finish – from, “Bad potty!” to “Good boy, mom is so proud of you!” You’ll learn about how to dog-proof your home to keep your new pal safe, and how to introduce your dog to other dogs, cats and kids. We have proven methods for training your dog to have wonderful doggy manners, and how to handle no-no’s that may arise – like chewing or digging.
III. How To Choose A Trainer
There are two basic training methods. One uses dominance and fear to force a dog to obey. The other, and only accepted method by UAF, is through positive reinforcement using praise and treats. Dogs are so eager to please us. They soak up reward and praise like furry little sponges, and nothing is more effective when training. This section will explain what to look for in the behavior of your trainer, as well as how your dog should react to proper training. Learn a bit about the Gentle Leader Harness that UAF recommends.
IV. Health Care
From your new dog’s first Veterinary checkup, to daily health maintenance, this section has some good solid advice on how to keep your new pal in tip top shape and feeling grrrrrrrreat!
V. Local Animal Hospitals That Give Outstanding Care
We are fortunate to have many local Animal Hospitals that will take great care of our furry friends. Here you’ll find 7 local Animal Hospitals that have given outstanding care to the animals UAF rescues and helps on their way to happy fur-evers.
VI. Coprophagia – Eating Feces
Disgusting to us, yuk!, but not to many puppies and dogs. Learn why dogs do it, and how to correct this behavior…before little Fluffy licks your face again!
VII. Poisonous Foods
It’s hard to resist giving in when Bubbles looks so darned adorable twirling around on her hind legs like a ballerina, begging for dessert. Did you know that chocolate is poisonous to dogs? (More for us!) You’ll be surprised by some of the other things that are as well.
VIII. Poisonous Plants
Nothing adds that nice outdoor touch to a room like some beautiful well placed plants. Pets enjoy them too, but eating them is way more fun than simply admiring them. Learn how to keep everyone happy!
IX. Basic First Aid Guide
Stuff happens. Even the most doting of pet parents can’t keep an eye out 24/7, and accidents do happen. This Guide will instruct you about what to do immediately and temporarily…then get to the Vet!
X. Recipes For Doggie Treats
Bonding while baking – now that’s a grrrrrreat idea! Your little angel will just love sitting there in the kitchen with you, sniffing in that mouth-watering liver scent while you mix it all up just for him or her. Don’t forget….dogs love to lick the bowl too!
XI. Free General Wellness Exam
Seven local Veterinary Hospitals are offering a free general health exam to those who adopt cats or dogs from United Animal Friends. The appointment must be made within two weeks of the adoption, and the Adoption Agreement must be presented at the time of the exam. This complimentary exam includes no shots or treatments.
XII. Free Feeding
Buffets are great for folks, but not for dogs. I so look forward to a brunch buffet at a nice restaurant on some special occasion. In the doggie world, though, free feeding is not a good idea. It may lead to undesirable, even dangerous, aggressive behaviors. Please read this chapter to find out more.
