Most of us do it. Our adorable furry kids look at us with those wide eyes, just begging us to give them a taste from our plate, and we cave. While many food items are harmless to pets, there are others containing chemicals that are down right dangerous, even sometimes lethal, to dogs.
Chocolate
Chocolate Toxicity is caused by a chemical called theobromine, a cardiac stimulant and diuretic. Dogs affected by an overdose of chocolate will become excited and show signs of hyperactivity. The diuretic in chocolate will cause very frequent urination and thirst. More severe symptoms are vomiting and diarrhea. The true danger is the cardiac stimulant, which may cause an irregular heartbeat, and even death when coupled with high activity.
Cocoa powder and baking chocolate are the most dangerous, as they contain 10 times more theobromine as milk chocolate. Eating ¼ packet of cocoa powder or ½ block of baking chocolate can cause severe toxicity. Semi-sweet and dark chocolate are the next most dangerous.
Onion
Onions contains the chemical thiosulphate, a chemical that causes red blood cells to burst while circulating within the body. Cats are in danger from onion as well. Dogs affected show signs of gastroenteritis, an inflammation of the stomach and intestines. It usually shows it’s ugly self a few days after the dog has eaten onion. This causes severe diarrhea, loss of appetite and lethargy. The pigment of the bursted blood cells show up in the urine, and the dog becomes breathless due to lack of red blood cells to carry oxygen. All forms of onion are dangerous, dehydrated, onion powder, cooked and raw, and poisoning can occur with one large meal, or several small meals containing onion. Baby food may also contain onion.
Garlic
Garlic also contains the chemical thiosulphate, as found in onion, but at lower concentrations. A dog would need to eat more of it to show the same symptoms as with onion, but it still poses a great danger.
Macadamia Nuts
Raw and roasted nuts are very toxic to dogs. The chemical within has not been isolated yet, but it causes locomotory difficulties for dogs. Skeletal muscle tremors occur, and weakness or paralysis of the hindquarters as well. The dog can’t get up. Sometimes limbs swell, and movement is painful. As few as 6 nuts being ingested have brought these symptoms on. Macadamia butter is also dangerous to dogs.
Avocado
Avocado has a chemical called persin. Symptoms show themselves through difficulty breathing, stomach enlargement, fluid in the chest and the heart sac.
Here are even more toxic foods – yikes!
